Here’s Why This BMW Bike Is The Ultimate Sport-Touring Machine
If you want a motorcycle that can handle the commute, weekend blasts, and a cross-country tour with equanimity, you’re in luck. The motorcycle market today is filled with such a wide variety of motorcycles, and there are so many sub-genres that it is impossible not to find something that can do everything you need, and most of what you want. You can have a laid-back tourer based on a cruiser, or you can have one of the new-fangled ‘crossovers’ that are comfortable sport bikes on stilts.
This new type of touring bike has a broader range of abilities than the traditional touring motorcycle or sport tourer by virtue of a combination of the long-travel suspension and seating position, giving them unbeatable ability when it comes to tarmac touring. BMW has a particular expertise in the segment, offering three highly capable crossover machines. Out of these, one hits the nail on the head by offering the ultimate blend of value, performance, and abilities.

The F 900 XR Is The Ultimate Sport-Touring Machine By BMW
Price: $12,690
The F 900 XR is classified under the ‘sport bike’ section of the BMW website, which proves its sporting credentials. It is based on the F 900 R naked bike, but in purpose (and seat height) sits somewhere in between that and the F 900 GS adventure bike. It can also be viewed as the stepping stone to the S 1000 XR, one of our favorite sport touring bikes. And in case you’re curious, we didn’t pick the S 1000 XR or M 1000 XR here because of their high prices and peaky engines.
Circling back, the F 900 is capable of commuting with its low weight and seat height. The latter is comfortable for a large variety of inseam lengths. It’s willing to play in the corners and offers enough comfort and performance for an all-day highway blast, too. This is why it is the touring bike that does it all.
BMW F 900 XR Highlights
- Adjustable suspension at the front for MY25
- Punchy parallel-twin engine
- Huge options list
BMW F 900 XR Engine: Cool, Calm, Collected
Shares Driveline With Other F 900 Models
The F 900 XR uses the same engine and gearbox as the F 900 R and F 900 GS. The state of tune remains the same as well. This 895 cc, 270-degree parallel twin puts out 105 horsepower and 68 pound-feet of torque. Both these things are available low in the RPMs to offer a punch wherever you’d like. A six-axis IMU and by-wire throttle mean that traction control and three ride modes are standard fare. The Premium Package adds cruise control, Ride Modes Pro with two additional modes, and a two-way quickshifter to the mix. Final drive is via a chain, keeping it constant with both the F series of engines as well as the XR series of bikes.

BMW F 900 XR Chassis: Confidence Inspiring
Just Enough Adjustability To Be Good
The F 900 XR follows the norm, with its twin-spar steel frame, with the engine as a stressed member and a two-sided swingarm at the rear. 43 mm inverted forks do duty at the front, and a rear monoshock with hydraulically adjustable preload and adjustable rebound damping takes care of the rear. Quality brakes – twin 320 mm floating discs at the front with radially mounted four-piston calipers from Brembo – help shed speed.
In case it’s too tall, lowered suspension is available for $225 and can be clubbed with a low seat for no extra cost. Dynamic ESA is also available for the rear shock and costs $475 extra. You cannot club the Dynamic ESA and lowered suspension, but you can have the ESA with the lowered seat.

Optional Packages Can Make Or Break The Experience
The F 900 XR comes standard with a 6.5-inch TFT screen, which is large, legible, and offers easy access to things like music control and navigation. For 2025, an adaptive headlamp that lights up corners is also standard. Among the other standard features are adjustable levers, a 12V socket, an adjustable windscreen, and heated grips. The F 900 XR has an amazing base price, but a lot depends on the additional packages that BMW is famous (notorious?) for
If you want your F 900 XR to look better, you’ll have to spring $375 for the Style Sport option that adds a body-colored belly scoop, red wheels, and gold front forks along with the new paint job. The $1,755 Premium Package is a must, whether you like it or not, because it offers keyless ignition, cruise control, saddlebag mounts, ride modes pro, GPS mount (but not GPS unit), the two-way quickshifter, tire pressure monitoring, and a high windshield. BMW Has The Narrowest Of Leads
The F 900 XR has the lowest base price among its peers, but that is also because it doesn’t offer the level of kit that the rest do as standard. The Yamaha Tracer 9 GT and Triumph Tiger 900 GT both offer two-way quickshifters as standard, for instance. In fact, the Yamaha has one that can shift either up or down, whether the throttle is open or shut. Meanwhile, the Honda NT1100 DCT, as the name suggests, offers an automatic gearbox.
It is also very interesting to see how all of these motorcycles approach touring. The Honda wants to take it easy, while the Yamaha is as eager as a Jack Russell terrier that has just heard the word ‘walk’. The Tiger, like the Yamaha, has a crankshaft that has a unique firing order, making this a very unique comparison table when it comes to firing order!
