Let’s Take A Glimpse Into Gold Wing History

Back in 1975, Honda brought its first touring machine. The GL1000 was offered as an all-new means of touring the country. Instead of sore wrists and numb backsides, tourers now have a motorcycle that was tailored to exactly what they needed. Yes, the original Gold Wing did have a very humble start with fairly basic features, but it was smooth, powerful, reliable, and most importantly, comfortable enough to cross continents without tiring you out.

Every generation since then, Honda has just given the bike more and more of what a motorcyclist doesn’t need, but wants. The flat-six engine, the shaft drive, integrated luggage, and a whole host of technology that you would see only in luxury cars. By the late 2010’s, the Gold Wing had grown into what we recognize today as the “Gold” standard in touring motorcycles, and now, we celebrate its 50th anniversary.

A Unique Six-Cylinder Engine For Smooth Performance

Hit the starter on the Gold Wing, and what greets you is the deep rumble of a huge 1,833 cc flat-six engine. In sheer numbers, with 125 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque, Honda’s engine is not really a fire-breathing dragon. But with six pistons creating six explosions in perfect sync, it is one of the smoothest engines you will ever find on a motorcycle.

The Dual Clutch Transmission takes away the hassle of constantly having to switch through gears while cruising the highways, giving you and your partner more time to look at the scenery. This is a smooth transmission, too, so you will barely notice when the bike’s computer decides to change gears. For traditionalists, a manual six-speed transmission is available as well.Another staple of the Gold Wing is the shaft drive, which takes away the need to constantly lubricate and maintain the chain every few hundred miles.

The engine is then mounted to an aluminum frame paired with a double-wishbone front suspension. This tech is mainly seen in luxury and sports cars and is extremely unusual on a motorcycle. But it is also one of the best setups out there when it comes to minimizing front-end dive under hard braking. At the back, a preload-adjustable Pro-Arm single-sided swingarm allows you to tune your ride based on how much you’re carrying.

The overall geometry has been honed for stability, so despite its 800-plus-pound curb weight, the low-mounted engine helps the Gold Wing feel balanced even at low speeds. Then there are the ergonomics. The seat is wide and supportive, and at just under 30 inches, it makes it easy for not just shorter riders but also the pillion when they need to get on or off.

When it comes to touring as a couple, it isn’t just about getting from A to B. There is a lot of conversation and chatter that can happen over long rides, and the wind can play spoilsport on long rides. For this, Honda has given the Gold Wing an electrically adjustable windscreen. It can be lowered or raised with a simple touch, adjusting the wind flow for both the rider and the passenger. The fairing and mirrors, too, have been designed in such a way that it deflects wind away to reduce buffeting.

Speaking of which, along with the intercom, the Gold Wing has some very fancy infotainment, all of which is fairly easy to use as well. A large 7-inch TFT display acts as your infotainment system and comes complete with support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You get navigation and music streaming and can even answer or ignore calls directly from your motorcycle. The interface itself is uncluttered, so most of your attention stays on the road rather than on the screen. To make things even simpler, voice commands can control a lot of these functions, so you don’t even have to lift your hands off the handlebars.

A Safe and Steady Partner

When it comes to technology, Honda didn’t skimp there either. The Gold Wing’s suite of electronic aids includes all the usual suspects like ABS, traction control, and riding modes. Plus, you get hill-start assist and cruise control as standard fitment across all trims. Additional points go to the Tour mode, which also gets an integrated airbag for even more safety.

All trims also get an integrated Starter Generator (ISG), allowing for near-silent starts and better power management. Combine this with LED lighting all around and cornering lights that light up the curves at night, and you have one very trustworthy machine.

But the real joy lies not in just the ride itself but in the person holding on behind you.
