Tens of thousands of cyclists took over the streets of New York City on Sunday for the 47th annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour.

Roads and bridges that are normally reserved for cars became a bike-only zone.

More than 30,000 cyclists of all levels come from around the world to participate in the annual ride and take advantage of the roughly 40 miles of car-free cycling through every borough.

Organizers say it’s the largest charitable bike ride in the country, and it raises money to fund the free bike education programs offered by Bike New York, an education nonprofit that focuses on bicycling advocacy in the city.

“My parents are really big bikers, they traveled here from Atlanta and they asked me to do it with them. So I’m borrowing my mom’s extra bike and I will be doing my best, but I am not prepared at all. I went for like a 20 minute bike ride yesterday to test out the bike, so I’m doing it to bond with my family,” said rider Dorothy Bailey, an NYU Student from Atlanta.

On Saturday morning, participants visited the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Morningside Heights for the “Blessing of the Bikes,” a 27-year tradition led this year by the Very Rev. Dr. Patrick Malloy.

Just outside the cathedral, the city Department of Transportation held a helmet giveaway, and DOT employees helped riders get their helmets fitted.

“Biking can be a little expensive, for sure. It’s not the cheapest hobby, so it’s really great that they’re at least taking that burden off of riders. And they’re great helmets,” cyclist Rebekah Isaacs said.
