Harley-Davidson Is Preparing New Long-Haul Touring Bikes, Says The Rumor Mill

Last year, Harley-Davidson overhauled its popular touring bikes–the Road Glide and Street Glide–with an array of upgrades. While everyone had their jaws on the floor, real Harley fanatics were curious to know whether we’d get full-dresser versions of these bikes. These would basically replace the uber-dated Road Glide Limited and Ultra Limited models. We’re happy to report that this might be happening soon. Let’s dive in.

Harley-Davidson Files Patents For New Tour-Pak Storage For Its Touring Bikes

The rumors of the new touring bikes stem from Harley-Davidson’s patent filings in Europe. These revolve around its new Tour-Pak luggage for its future touring bikes. The patents primarily include a new top box, vastly different from the current setup seen on the 2024 Limited models. It’s worth noting the current top box design has turned a decade old, so an update is more necessary than you think.

Coming to the differences, the new Tour-Pak has a different lid, visibly thicker than the current design. A new “hump” is present, which results in a steeper angle of the luggage rack. A closer look reveals revised passenger accommodations, too. The headrest is different, and you get two visibly new speakers near the armrests.

All this while, the luggage opens the same way as before. There are two hinges on the left side and a key-operated lock on the right. Interestingly, the patent also hints at an alternative opening towards the rear. It could be bigger, aimed at increasing the ease of taking out (or putting in) your valuables.

Luggage patent filings are barely a confirmation of new touring bikes. But they do hint at what Harley could do next. The first thing that comes to mind is, of course, the arrival of new Road Glide Limited and Ultra Limited models.

These bikes have followed in the footsteps of the standard Road Glide and Street Glide models, matching the design and underpinnings albeit with extra touring features. So the new Limited models could arrive with this new top box, along with a refreshed fascia that matches the recently updated Glides.

Another possibility is that Harley could just discontinue both these Limited models and sell the new Tour-Pak as an official accessory. That way, the Grand American Touring lineup would become tighter than before. It would mean less marketing, R&D, and manufacturing costs for the American giant.

Anyway, we’ll have an official answer soon. Harley-Davidson tends to reveal its new lineup for the year in January, so we’re merely a month away from finding out what’s in store. We’re rooting for new H-D touring motorcycles. What about you?
