Summer car maintenance tips you need to know

As temperatures rise and drivers across the UK start planning summer road trips, staycations, and weekends away, it’s the perfect time to give your car the attention it deserves. While winter tends to get all the headlines when it comes to vehicle prep, summer brings its own set of challenges that can be just as damaging if ignored.

From overheated engines to underperforming air conditioning, hot weather can push your car harder than you might think. Here’s a breakdown of the essential checks and maintenance tasks every driver should tackle before hitting the road this summer — straight from the experts at Opie Oils.

Check your engine oil

Most drivers know engine oil reduces friction between moving parts, but fewer realise it also plays a crucial role in cooling. In hot weather, your engine can run at higher temperatures for longer, especially during motorway driving or stop-start traffic in the city.

Low or old oil reduces the engine’s ability to stay cool, which can lead to overheating and accelerated wear. Make sure your oil is at the correct level and change it if it’s close to the recommended interval. And if you’re topping up, check that the oil you’re using meets the specification required for your vehicle.

Check coolant levels and condition

Your car’s cooling system is the frontline defence against overheating. That means it’s vital to check coolant levels before long drives or holiday getaways. Most modern vehicles are well-sealed, but older systems may slowly lose coolant over time. If your coolant looks rusty, sludgy, or low, it might be time for a flush and refill. Also, ensure you’re using the correct type of antifreeze/coolant — mixing incompatible fluids can cause long-term damage.

Check brake Fluid

Brake fluid is often overlooked, but it’s hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture over time. During summer, this can be especially problematic as fluid with a high water content can boil under heavy braking, reducing effectiveness or causing brake fade. If your brake fluid hasn’t been changed in the last two years —  or you’re not sure when it was last changed — now is a good time to inspect it or get it tested.

Check your air conditioning

Nothing ruins a summer drive like a malfunctioning air con system. If your air conditioning is blowing warm air or struggling to cool the cabin, it could be due to low refrigerant gas, clogged cabin filters, or system contamination. While regassing usually needs to be done by a professional, you can easily replace cabin filters and use specialist air-con cleaning products to improve airflow and remove odours and bacteria. Some systems also benefit from A/C lubricants, which help maintain seals and reduce wear.

Check your tyre pressure and TPMS

Although your tyres might not be on your radar at this time of year, keeping an eye on tyre pressure is still crucial for summer safety. Hot weather increases tyre pressure, and underinflated or overinflated tyres can lead to uneven wear or, in extreme cases, blowouts. Many modern cars have a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System). Make sure it’s functioning correctly and calibrated after any tyre maintenance.

Top-up summer-specific fluids

Summer driving kicks up more dust, dirt, and insect remains than you might expect. Keep your washer fluid reservoir topped up with a summer-grade screen wash designed to cut through grime and seagull souvenirs. Other helpful additions for your glovebox or boot include bug remover spray, microfibre cloths, UV-protectant dashboard wipes, and a 1L top-up of your favourite engine oil for peace of mind. Disposable gloves are a bonus if you find yourself topping up at the roadside.

Prepare for the worst (just in case)

Even with the best preparation, breakdowns happen. Pack a summer emergency kit that includes water, high-SPF sunscreen, a reflective vest, torch, phone charger, and basic first-aid supplies. It’s also worth checking that your spare wheel (if you have one) is properly inflated — or that your tyre fix kit is in good condition and within date.

“Hot weather can be just as demanding on your car as icy winters — in some ways, more so. Whether you’re nipping down the coast or crossing the Channel, taking an hour to check the essentials could save you from a breakdown, an expensive repair, or a very uncomfortable wait on the hard shoulder. A little care goes a long way— and as always, if you’re unsure what fluids your car needs or how to carry out a particular check, ask an expert before you hit the road.”
